I’ve been involved in member care since 1975, and in those years, I’ve seen many ideas come, go, and come back again—often in new forms. Most of my career has centered around the life of a psychologist: psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and the treatment of mental and emotional dysfunction. But running alongside that has always been a deep interest in technology—how it might serve people in their growth and flourishing.
Back in the 1980s, I worked on early computer-based tools for psychological assessment. In the early 2000s, I joined a team in Cambodia developing an online learning platform for “Business as Mission.” Later, my technical curiosity drew me into radio—shortwave, digital, and internet broadcasting—and some of those programs are still available online today.
A few years ago, my attention turned to the potential of artificial intelligence in the world of pastoral care. I had begun to step away from the overregulated world of licensed psychology and into the more open, systems-based approach of pastoral care—a move that allowed me to focus on how people grow closer to their Lord and Savior through Scripture, prayer, and spiritual practice.
I’ve long observed that many believers today lack ready access to Scripture—not because they don’t own a Bible, but because they struggle to recall or apply its truths in the moments that matter most. As the modern church has moved away from structured teaching and memorization, the need for accessible, everyday discipleship tools has only grown stronger. Rather than remain in a reactive model of care, I wanted to help people develop preventative and discipleship-oriented pathways—and that’s where AI became a natural ally.
Thanks to a Bay Area startup, I was able to develop my first Pastoral Caregiving Assistant, an AI-powered application designed to help people find Scriptural insights, prayer guidance, and practical strategies for daily spiritual growth. It’s now available on my website and is being tested in several churches.
Today, my focus has expanded as I consult with Gloo, Inc., helping shape guidelines, guardrails, and onboarding processes for integrating pastoral AI tools into the broader ecosystem of faith-based applications.
In this eighth decade of my life, I’m as excited as ever. My mission remains simple and strong: to help people discover how their knowledge of Scripture—and its daily application—can deepen their walk with Christ, strengthen their prayer life, and support their spiritual maturity.
Stay tuned, and join me on this journey.
